Map of City of Havana and Marianao, Road Map of Cuba
The official title of this map is “Plano de La Habana y Marianao a Colores”. It is subtitled as “City Map of Havana, and Marianao in Colors and Complete Road Map of the Island of Cuba Showing Main Highways and Side Roads”. It is “Tercera Edicion” and originally sold for $1. It was designed to help the foreign tourist make his or her way across Havana and Cuba.
The map comes folded within a soft-cover booklet that measures 5 inches by 8 ¾ inches. It has a pictorial cover that shows the Shield of Havana on the front and the U.S. and Cuban flags on the back cover. It is published by Frank Rojo, Havana, Cuba and was founded in 1899. The map, when folded, measures 4 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches. The map when completely opened is 25 ¼ inches by 35 inches, so it is quite large. The map is two sided. One side has a series of vignette photos in sepia of the Havana area along with a detailed map of the streets of Havana. This map is beautifully done in bright colors of blue, yellow, white and black. The reverse side is printed in black and white. The second side has a map of the island of Cuba and shows the main roads across the country. The second side also has an index to help locate streets in Havana, along with a small map that shows "A Selection of Bus Routes of the City of Havana,". Finally, there are details in both English and Spanish with regards to rules of the road in Cuba. One thing that the map lacks is a date. We have been unable to determine a date either on the piece or by internet research. We do know that the map shows a military airport, so it has been printed after aviation was developed.
Overall the piece is in remarkable condition. It looks like it has hardly been used at all. The covers are generally quite clean with no significant yellowing of the paper. There is one white spot of unknown origin in the middle bottom third of the front cover along with a ¼ inch tear on the right side. The map has some minor yellowing from age, but does not have the tears and fold separations that one would expect on an old street map. Generally speaking this is a remarkable survivor. We have located one copy of this map on the internet that was available for several hundred dollars. We have priced this piece to sell. It is rare and this might be your only chance to obtain such a beautiful item.
