This is a rare Civil War era document from the 84th Regiment United States Colored Infantry. The war had just ended and the U.S. was in the process of mopping up and trying to put the country back together. The piece is dated June 1, 1865 in Key West, Florida, Department of the Gulf and documents the payment of $110.80 to 2nd Lt. Charles B Rohan. The pay is for both the soldier and one “servant”. The “servants” name is Joseph Brooks who is described as mulatto. Rohan was paid $90 and Brooks was paid $32. There was a $13 clothing allowance along with deductions for rations. This document is an interesting glimpse into one of the lesser known aspects of the American Civil War and the U. S. Colored Troops. It is also a nice piece for collectors of autographs or Civil War history.

The document is in fair condition. It is filled out in beautiful handwriting with strong ink. The paper is yellowed and fragile, as would be expected. It measures 11 1/4 inches by 17 inches. There is darkening along all of the folds. As is typical of documents of this size, it has been folded for most of its life and the folds have weakened or separated. Somebody in the past has repaired the separations and strengthened the weak folds with archival tape. There is a much earlier repair that was done with non-archival tape and has darkened considerably. All of this now holds the document together nicely with only the small amount of discoloration from the tape which is visible in the photographs. This is a terrific display piece that should be framed and preserved for posterity. There is a small section of summary information on the reverse side which you might also want to show if the piece is framed. We have done a cursory search of the internet for information about this unit and the individuals mentioned. Not much was immediately found. There is potential for even more research to be done that would add additional interest to this item.
