This wonderful original photo is of a very happy B-17 crew taken during World War II. They have completed their mission over Germany and are ready to go home. The nose art on the plane says “Little Gismo” with a gangster cartoon character carrying a bomb and being followed by a dog. Above the art there are 30 painted bombs signifying 30 completed missions along with 1 painted swastika which probably signifies one Nazi plane that they shot down. The photo is 8 inches by 10 inches, matte finish and has a sepia tone developed from age. One corner is crinkled as shown in the image with the listing. There is very minor occasional spotting along with some fading.
There is a second photo that came with the first one. It appears to be the same B-17 crew with a few personnel changes. This time they are in front of the plane looking at a map, one would assume in preparation for an upcoming bombing mission. This photo is on glossy 8 inch by 10 inch paper and is more of a black and white image. There are some rough spots around the edges, a few scratches, some spotting and folds.
Together the two photos make a nice little archive of one of America’s finest hours from the “greatest generation.” We have tried to do some research into the plane and crew, but with only minimal success. There are several references to a “Little Gismo II”, but nothing we can locate for a “Little Gismo”. Perhaps you will have better luck!
