This hard-to-come-by piece of early ephemera is a souvenir view booklet of the Antietam Battlefield. It was published in 1928 by Martin L. Burgan, Sharpsburg, Md. The piece is stated as the “Second Edition, Revised”. It has lots of photos of the battlefield and town of Sharpsburg, Maryland along with written history of the area and battle. There is a good comprehensive map of the battle, as well. It also contains two page panoramic views from the observation tower on Bloody Lane. The booklet has a soft cover and stapled binding. There are 40 pages. The cover is printed on glossy white paper in red and black. The cover measures 7 3/4 inches by 10 inches. The booklet has survived well over the years considering that it was never intended to survive long. There is some light soiling to the cover along with several small tears of about ½ inch each. Inside the pages are still nice and white with only very minor yellowing and occasional smudges. The photos of the town and battlefield are terrific, giving a good sense of what the area looked like 65 years after the battle. It would be interesting to take this booklet to Sharpsburg today and compare the images.
