This is a wonderful piece of Norwegian silver made by the well known silversmith Brodrene Lohne from Bergen. It is in excellent condition showing only very minor wear. It measures 4 ½ inches long and the bowl is 1 3/8 inches by 1 inch. It has the hallmark “Lo” for Lohne and carries the stamp “830S” which is the Norwegian version of sterling silver. The weight is 0.4 ounces or 11 grams. Running up the handle it says “Nissen Spiser Grot” which roughly translates as “Nissen eats porridge”. A nissen is a mythical figure in Norway that could be considered much like an elf or gnome. These figures are very popular around the Christmas holiday and some people consider them to be much like Santa Claus. At the top of the handle there is a nissen sitting on a bench with a bowl of porridge in front of him and a spoon in his hand. From further down the handle of the spoon sits a cat watching him eat. This is a delightful item, a great souvenir of the “old country”, and would be a nice addition to your spoon collection. If you have a young Viking in your family, then he or she will most likely love to own this piece.
