We are offering a Navajo (Dineh) saddle blanket woven in a banded design where each band contains 3 double-headed arrows. The piece is woven with hand-spun wool all in natural colors of beige, browns and black. We believe that it dates from the 2nd quarter of the 20th century. It measures 34 inches by 49 inches. The weaving is very well done. It is an even and heavy weave, as it would need to be for a saddle blanket. It displays beautifully. There is definitely an A side and a B side. The A side, or display side, is very nice. It is clean and in good condition. There is some occasional loss of cord around the edges, several small pulls, and 3 of the 4 corner tassels are intact. The piece has very nice lazy lines. The corners do not lie flat but have a tendency to curl in, as is seen in the photos. One of the corners has the original metal tag from the trading post it was purchased at. The B side has some issues including dye runs and a rust stain. The rug must have come in contact with another rug that was wet and contained red. As a result the red has bled onto the B side and left several stains as is shown in the photos. In addition, there is a rust stain in the shape of a pin about 2 inches long that appears in one of the lighter areas . Look carefully at the photos and you will see the issues that we have described. None of these stains carry through to the A side. We are not trying to hide anything! The B side also has an overall darker look to it which indicates that it has some dirt on it. We have not cleaned the piece and do not know if the issues that we have mentioned could be removed with cleaning. All that being said, if you are looking for a display piece, then this is a very nice rug and the A side is outstanding for display. We have included a photograph that has a quarter in it so that you can determine the warp and weft count for yourself. There is no odor to the weaving, which indicates that this weaving was not in moth ball storage nor was it in a smoker’s home. If the B side bothers you, then you might have the rug cleaned and repaired. As it exists now the A side is ready to be displayed and would look wonderful draped over a railing, Molesworth sofa, or in an Arts and Crafts Stickley setting.
