For years the Navajo Indians, or Dineh, of the American southwest have been known for their wonderful weaving. Within their weaving community there is a subset of weavers who specialize in making miniature versions of the much larger rugs. Do not let the word “miniature” fool you. These weavings are made by skilled artisan weavers with the same attention to detail and design as are the much larger rugs. They are not casual pieces thrown together for the tourist trade. Many of these rugs originate from the Sawmill/White Clay area of the Navajo reservations and have become highly desirable and collectible.

This piece is a Ganado regional miniature weaving based on the exclusive use of red and black with the strong geometric motif. It could possibly be intended to represent a saddle blanket. It measures 6 1/4 inches by 8 5/8 inches. It has 9 warp threads to the inch. The weave is heavy, tight, and evenly done. The edges are straight and tight, and the corners are all intact with the tassels in place. It is a very colorful and striking piece made with vibrant red and intense black. The piece is in excellent condition. It is clean, the colors are bright, and there are no pulls, snags, or holes. It is a beautiful weaving that took many hours to complete and is done by a master weaver. It is clearly a labor of love and a fine example of miniature Navajo weavings. If you do not wish to spend the money for an expensive full size Navajo weaving, then you might want to consider this wonderful miniature as a more than adequate substitute. Consider displaying it in a well chosen frame, have it archivally matted and then hang it as an accent piece on your den wall. It will continue to draw comments of wonder and amazement as people ponder the difficulty of doing such fine work on such a small scale.
