This wonderful ceramic and metal tray comes from pre-World War II Germany in the 1920's. It measures about 12.5 inches in diameter and has a total height of 1 inch. It consists of a round ceramic glazed tile in the center that has been decorated with three sections of floral bouquets consisting of violets and lily-of-the-valley. The design is light and cheery. There is an inventory or design code number 3C and B on the back that means nothing to us. Around the rim is metal edging that is made of an unknown metal that appears to be copper, although it is difficult to say for sure. The base metal has been nickel plated. The metal has a patina that is typical of aged nickel. It some places the nickel has been worn away showing the base metal. There are also a number of spots of green oxidation on the nickel. The ceramic tray is in very good condition. There are two very small spots where the glaze failed to cover the surface revealing the unglazed tile surface from underneath. There are two small spots where the glaze has chipped off. These are about 1/8 inches across or less. There are the usual subtle scratches in the surface of the glaze on the ceramic tile that are typical of used pieces such as this. The damaged areas are extremely small and very easily overlooked. Overall, this is a decorative item that you would always feel comfortable using or displaying at any time. It would look great hanging on a wall but would also be a nice way to serve your cheese and crackers with a good glass of wine!
