Pyrography and Paint Decorated Wooden Bread Tray w/ Poppies, Ca. 1910
We are offering a nice bread tray that has been carefully decorated with pyrography and painted to accent the flower design. The motif is poppy blossoms and leaves covering all of the inside surfaces and the outsides. The tray measures about 10.75 inches long, 4.75 inches wide, and 2.25 inches tall. The colors of the painted flowers and foliage have muted over the years but the design is still visible and obvious. As is common with pieces such as this there is a protective coat of varnish on the surface that has keep the tray in good condition for all this time but is probably responsible for the muting of the paint. The tray is clean and solid with no cracks in the wood. There is some very minor separation where part of the bottom has pulled slightly away from the sides but it has not weakened the piece in any way. It is a piece you would be pleased to use at your next social gathering or simply put on your desk for display or collecting loose change, paper clips or pens. Pyrography, or wood burning, often referred to as Flemish Art, was a popular decorative style common in the early 1900's. It is associated with the Arts and Crafts movement because of its simplicity and artistic qualities. Today it is a highly collected and desirable art form.
