Here is a neat little item that is most likely a souvenir brought home by a soldier who was stationed in Belgium at the conclusion of World War II. It is a hand carved wooden shoe that has been nicely painted with a number of decorative elements. It has been hand shaped out of a piece of solid hardwood. The shoe measures about 7 ½ inches long, is 3 inches wide, and is 3 inches tall. The tool marks are obvious leaving no doubt that it was hand made. The front of the shoe has a set of crossed flags, one from the U.S. and the other from Belgium. Between them the date 1945 is written in black. On either side of the toe there is painted what appears to be a set of green clover leaves. On the tip of the toe, there is a red field covered with white dots and outlined in green. Additional color in red and green paint is along the opening for the foot. On the lower right outside toe the word “Belgium” is written in black. The inside is painted with a light blue wash. The whole surface of the shoe has been top-coated with at least one layer of varnish. Through the years the varnish has developed the crackling that is indicative of an early finish. This is a very nice little item that displays well. One can only imagine the story that is associated with it, or what the story was for the individual who brought it home in the first place.
