This wonderful piece is part of a series of items that were made in post-World War II Belgium to help people get back on their feet financially. This item is a carved wooden shoe mounted to a wooden stand and serves as a cigarette holder, ashtray, match holder. On the instep of the shoe there is a quaint low-country painting of a small town with a windmill. The rest of the shoe’s surface is covered with some grain painting, much of which has been lost over the years. The shoe is made from solid oak that has been partitioned inside to provide space to hold cigarettes and serve as an ashtray. Two brass cigarette holders are attached to the edge of the shoe. Next to the shoe there is a brass clip for holder a box of matches.
The piece measures 8 inches long, 4 ¼ inches wide, and 3 inches tall. It is in used condition. The painted surfaces have experienced some loss over the years, but the majority of the windmill painting is still present and looks good. The brass pieces are all original and have the patina that develops over time. Most of the grain painted around the sides of the shoe is missing. Structurally the piece is sound. It would look wonderful sitting on a coffee table or shelf where it will most likely draw people’s attention. As a piece of folk art it is delightful. If you are an enthusiast for Belgium or like items made in post-World War II European cottage industries, then you really need to have this item.
