This wonderful piece is part of a series of items that were made in post-World War II Belgium to help people get back on their feet financially. This item is a carved wooden shoe mounted to a wooden stand and serves as a pin cushion and thimble holder. On the instep of the shoe there is a painted carving of a woman sewing while sitting on a rock with a windmill in the background. Inserted into the shoe there is a pin cushion. In front of it there is a hole that is clearly intended for holding a thimble. Unfortunately, the thimble is not present but a new one could certainly be used in its place.
The piece measures 8 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 2 7/8 inches tall. It is in good used condition. The carving still has the vast majority of its paint. The pin cushion appears to be original, is a bit soiled but still in respectable and certainly usable condition. The wood is all protected with a coat of varnish that has some minor scratches, abrasions, and marks that are associated with use. Structurally the piece is sound. It would look wonderful sitting on a coffee table or shelf where is will most likely draw people’s attention. It you collect sewing memorabilia then this is a must-have item. If you are an enthusiast for Belgium or like items made in post-World War II European cottage industries, then you really need to have this item.
