This wonderful piece is part of a series of items that were made in post-World War II Belgium to help people get back on their feet financially. This item is a carved wooden shoe mounted to a wooden stand and serves as a cigarette holder, ashtray and matchbox holder. On the instep of the shoe there is a wonderful hand carved rampant lion coat of arms that represents Belgium and is superimposed on the colors of the national flag. The shoe is made from solid oak that has been partitioned inside to provide space to hold cigarettes and serve as an ashtray. Two brass cigarette holders are attached to the edge of the shoe. Next to the shoe there is a solid brass clip for holding a box of matches.
The piece measures 8 inches long, 4 ¼ inches wide, and 3 ¼ inches tall. It is in good used condition. The brass has the patina that all brass develops with age. The wood is protected with a coat of varnish that has some minor scratches, abrasions, and marks that are associated with use. Structurally the piece is sound. It would look wonderful sitting on a coffee table or shelf where is will most likely draw people’s attention. If you are an enthusiast for Belgium or like items made in post-World War II European cottage industries, then you really need to have this item.
