This rare piece of ephemera is a classic study and analysis of the battle of Gettysburg, prepared by one of the better known participants, Abner Doubleday. Doubleday was a controversial figure at Gettysburg due to his rocky relationship with George Meade. The title page states that the book is “A succinct account of the campaign and battles, with the aid of one diagram and twenty-nine maps”. It was originally copyrighted by The Century Co. of New York in 1888 and modified and copyrighted again in 1909. This is the 1909 version. The piece is bound in heavy cardboard wrappers that are faded to pink with black print. It measures 5 3/8 inches by 8 inches. An ad is inside the front cover and another one inside the back cover. There are a total of 59 pages of text, maps and diagrams. Several of the most important maps are two page spreads. This is a rare item and a must-have for any collector of Civil War printed material.
The condition is quite good considering that it is old paper. The covers are both sound with a small fold in the lower right corner of the front and a missing chip on the edge of the rear cover and another chip missing on the front spine. The book is stapled together and there is some loss and weakening of the covers around the staples. All pages are still intact and solid with no loose pages. Inside the pages are clean with the minor yellowing associated with aged paper. It might be possible to find a better copy, but is unlikely.
This is one of the best Civil War items that we have carried in some time. Not only because of the condition, but because of the rarity and the fact that the tactics of Gettysburg are explained in depth by one of the major players who was actually there. The many maps, alone, make this a worth acquisition for your collection. Sweetpea Cottage stands behind everything that we sell.
