We are one of the few shops remaining from the early days of Ruby Lane who are still able to sell our own original artisan crafted wooden items.
Done in the style of an antique Norwegian tine (pronounced tee-na) or box, this artisan crafted bentwood box has a contemporary twist as it foregoes the two notched vertical end posts and replaces them with stationary posts and a wooden key. It is entirely constructed with solid Pennsylvania harvested quartersawn black cherry selected for the beautiful grain, color, and stability of the wood. The steam bent sides of the box are fastened together with split-reed chain stitching set into a carved flap. The two corner posts are of different sizes and shapes in order to provide added interest to the piece. The larger and more traditional vertical post accepts a wooden key that slides into it locking the lid in place. The lid is removed by taking out the key and then sliding the lid up and away from the smaller vertical post. The sides of the box and the lid have been hand scalloped to produce a texture effect that, combined with the color of the wood, makes the piece resemble leather. This tine is a modern interpretation of the traditional antique Norwegian, Swedish, or Scandinavian tine and is based on several antique tiner that we have in our personal collection. This piece could serve nicely as a desk box, executive lunch box, or even a jewelry box. It has been completely artisan crafted from start to finish in my shop using the absolute best materials.
The box measures about 8 1/2 inches long. It stands 4 1/8 inches tall and the total height to the tip of the higher corner post is 5 3/8 inches. It measures 5 inches across at the base and the lid is a bit larger measuring about 5 5/8 inches across. The box was fumed in ammonia gas to intensify the color of the wood. A small amount of antique cherry stain was applied to the wood after fuming. It was then coated with two layers of shellac and finally several coats of polyurethane oil. All of this helps to enhance the color of the wood. Over the years it will continue to develop a deep rich patina. Finally, it has been treated with a patina wax to enhanced the look of the cherry. The unique design adds a special quality to this beautiful interpretation of a classic folk-art box. The color and shape of the box make it a wonderful display piece. What a great gift for the Viking in your family.
