Done in the style of antique Norwegian tine boxes, this artisan made bentwood box is entirely constructed with solid Pennsylvania harvested quartersawn white oak chosen because of the beautiful grain and color of the wood. The bent wood side of the box is fastened together with split reed that is chain laced in the style used by early Norwegian craftsmen. It has been reinforced with three clinched copper tacks as is done with Shaker boxes. The corner posts are cut in a graceful arching style that is reminiscent of a Viking helmet. The handle reinforces the theme of the corner posts with a raised rim running along the top. It is a beautiful interpretation of the traditional antique Norwegian, Swedish, or Scandinavian tine, and could serve nicely as a bride's box. It has been completely artisan crafted from start to finish in the woodworking workshop at Sweetpea Cottage.
The box, or tine, measures about 9 inches long. It stands 4 inches tall and the total height to the tips of the corner posts is 5.75 inches. It measures 4.875 inches across at the base and the lid is a bit larger measuring about 5.125 inches across. The wood has been stained using a traditional Mission Arts and Crafts color so that it should continue to develop a deep rich patina over the years. It is top coated with several layers of polyurethane varnish finish that adds to the deep rich color and protects the wood as well. It has a final coat of a high quality conservator's wax that provides a satin sheen. This box is well on its way to developing the classic patina that is so sought after and the simple elegant styling of the design adds a special dimension to this beautiful folk art box. The color and shape of the box has a classic Arts and Crafts quality that will make it a wonderful display piece. What a great gift for the Viking in your family.
