Norwegian Round Tine/Bent Cherry Wood Box, Artisan Crafted at Sweetpea Cottage
This tine is made entirely with quartersawn Pennsylvania black cherry that was selected because of the wonderful striking grain and color of the wood. The wood has been carefully steam bent and fastened together with split lacing in the style used by early Norwegian craftsmen. A series of copper Shaker tacks have been added in the manner of Shaker boxes. The cherry is a beautiful reddish-brown in color that will continue to darken and enrich with age. The corner posts are cut in a graceful veined arched style and enhanced with carved textured elements. The turtle-back shaped lid has been scalloped across the top to add an interesting textural element. The lid snaps down tightly onto the corner posts, giving this type of box the nickname "snap box." It is a beautiful interpretation of the traditional Norwegian, Swedish, or Scandinavian tine, and could serve nicely as a bride's box. The box measures about 8.25 inches from end to end and is 7.125 inches in diameter. It stands 4.25 inches tall and the total height to the tips of the corner posts is 5.75 inches. The wood has not been stained so it retains its natural color. It is coated with several layers of polyurethane/oil to deepen and enrich the color and grain as well as protect the wood. Finally, it is coated with a high quality conservator's wax which adds a smooth tactile element to the piece. The color and shape of the box has a classic Arts and Crafts style that will make it a wonderful display piece. What a thoughtful gift for the Viking in your family.
Hand crafted in the Woodworking Shop at Sweetpea Cottage, this classic bent wood box is a unique item reflecting the simplicity of fine folk art, made in the traditional manner of the Norwegian tine, or tina (pronounced tee-na). It can stand on its own as a piece of art, or it would make an excellent conversation piece, storage box for desk detritus, or jewelry box. Our tines have even been used as the final resting place for the ashes of departed loved-ones and for very special pets. If you know somebody of Scandinavian heritage, this would be a great nostalgia gift. See our "Favorite Links" for information about these boxes. For years now, the tines made in the Woodworking Shop at Sweetpea Cottage have been eagerly sought by discriminating collectors of fine artisan wood items.
