We are one of the few shops remaining from the early days of Ruby Lane who, because of grandfathering, are still able to sell our own original artisan crafted items. Hand crafted in our own Woodshop at Sweetpea Cottage, this box is made with quartersawn Pennsylvania black cherry that was selected because of the striking quartersawn grain pattern. Crafted like a piece of fine furniture and elegantly styled, it is capped with a stylized birdseye maple blank and fitted with a cubed solid ebony handle. It has been styled like the dresser boxes, dressing table trays, or jewelry boxes, that were made during the Arts and Crafts era. The mitered lid peaks in the middle where the birdseye blank and ebony cube sit proudly in the center of the lid.. The combination of the reddish-brown color of the cherry and the rich black ebony on top of the birds-eye maple adds an interesting element to an already wonderful box. For ease of access the lid is not hinged so that it lifts off. The inside bottom is lined with a piece of brown felt. The four feet also have felt pads so that it will sit quietly on any surface.

The box dimensions are about 7 1/4 inches long and about 7 1/4 inches wide. The total height is 6 inches with the body of the box about 3 5/8 inches tall. The sides are canted dramatically in the style frequently found in fine Arts and Crafts furniture. The cherry was fumed in concentrated ammonia to bring out the rich tones of the wood. This guarantees that the color of the wood will not fade over the years and the cherry will continue to develop its rich dark patina. After fuming a red-brown mission color stain was applied to enhance the reddish color. The piece was dressed with several coats of a polyurethane/oil finish. Finally it was hand rubbed with high quality carnauba wax and then wheel buffed. It has a wonderful semi-glossy finish that is sure to please. All attempts have been made to use the finest materials possible and create a truly unique one-of-a-kind piece that will give years of pleasure and use.
