Hand crafted in our own woodworking shop at Sweetpea Cottage, this quartersawn white oak dresser, desk, or keepsake box is a one-of-a-kind treat for someone special. It is elegant enough to sit on the finest executive desk. Crafted like a piece of fine furniture, it is capped with a fossil ammonite shell that has been cut and polished into a cabochon. The fossil has two fragments of ammonite shell imbedded in what appears to be an agate matrix. The box has been entirely constructed from quartersawn white oak that was selected for the stunning fleck in the grain pattern that runs throughout the wood. It is styled like the dresser boxes, or jewelry boxes, that were made during the Arts and Crafts era. The lid is mitered and peaks in the middle where the fossil is set. The sides of the box are canted with a gentle slope in the traditional style of arts and crafts furniture made during that era. Inside as an added surprise on the underside of the lid there is an ammonite shell that was carved into the white oak in our shop. This box would be a great place to store those little items that would tend to get lost on a desk or dresser.
The box measures about 7 1/8inches long and about 7 1/8 inches wide. The total height including the lid is 4 inches, with the body of the box alone standing 3 3/8 inches tall. Because it is made with solid white oak, it is very heavy. In the manner of Stickley, the wood has been fumed with ammonia to obtain the traditional deep rich color found in arts and crafts furnishings. This has helped to develop the visual impact of the wood grain and emphasize the fleck of the quartersawn wood. The surface has been finished with several coats of a polyurethane/oil finish and then topped off with hand-rubbed high quality wax. The piece will continue to darken and enrich with age. The lid is designed so that it can be lifted free of the box making it much easier to access the many items that you choose to place into it. The interior is finished in the same manner as the outside. The bottom inside of the box is lined with a piece of brown felt and the feet sit on felt pads to protect any surface that the box sits on. This is not your standard jewelry box, although it could serve as a very nice and unusual jewelry box. It is a piece of fine art and a cut above what is normally available either on the internet or in fine craft shops. All efforts were made to produce the absolute best quality box possibility. Remember, this is a completely artisan crafted item in our wood shop; it is not something that you will find copies of in other shops or studios. It is a one-of-a-kind piece.
