This wonderful two stick copper candlestick or candelabrum is a one-of-a-kind piece. Made with very heavy gauge sheet copper it has has been hammered and dimpled in the style commonly found in pieces from the Arts and Crafts era. The two candle cups have the look of copper but might be brass. The two cups also appear to be the bottoms of two spent military shell casings that have been cut off and cleverly disguised to be compatible with the overall look of the piece. If that is the case then this item might even be categorized as trench art. On the top center of the piece there is a piece of white metal that we suspect is aluminum which has been riveted to the copper. That also suggests that the piece might have military origins as sheet aluminum was not commonly available to the average person. On the diamond shaped piece of aluminum written in wiggle work is the saying “My Own Fate.” You will need to decide for yourself what that means.
The piece stands a total of 7 3/4 inches tall and the arms have a spread of 5 1/8 inches. The circular base measures 4 1/4 inches in diameter. The construction was all done with clinched rivets that have managed to keep the piece solid over the years. The condition is excellent. The copper has the wonderful patina that one hopes for. There is some minor green oxidation on the base. It has a great look sitting on a table and is a sure-fire conversation starter. Whatever its origins really are, this is a great collectible for anybody who likes the Arts and Crafts look.
