We are offering one of the nicest collapsible Victorian carved walnut shelves that we have ever had in our inventory. This piece is beautifully carved with lots of details and care towards the aesthetics of the piece. It measures a total of 15 3/4 inches long by 10 inches wide. When fully open and hanging against a wall it will extend out 6 ½ inches. When closed the shelf folds upward and the shelf support folds flat to the right. The theme of the carving is a cross that is surrounded with intertwined vines. It is in exceptionally good condition overall. That being said, there are a few condition points. The shelf has two sets of waterstaining rings that are on the top and cannot be removed. There are a number of locations where the wood was split and repaired. These repairs were made long ago and are well done. The repairs have not jeopardized the integrity of the piece at all. It is rock solid. There is a small hole in the surface of the shelf that extends all the way through. This hole accepts a pin from underneath that helps to anchor the shelf and keep the support in place. All hinges are original The underside of the shelf has an impressed number 180 that is most likely an inventory number. Items such as this were often made in small home industries in the U.S. mid-west. This is a wonderful item that has survived well and looks great hanging on a wall. It is the perfect piece to hang in your drawing room or library, and is waiting for the right Victorian painted lady to come along.
