Sweetpea Cottage is offering you the opportunity to have one of the earlier road maps of Yellowstone National Park. This map was prepared only 19 years after the park was created. Measuring 27 ½ by 19 ½ inches, this untitled folding black and white lithographed map is from the report "Construction and Improvements of Roads and Bridges in the Yellowstone National Park" by W. A. Jones, an appendix to the "Report of the Secretary of War...to the Two Houses of Congress" for 1891. The scale is 1" = approximately 2.65 miles. As a result it is one of the most detailed maps of the park as well as one of the larger early maps. The north, south and east boundaries are present, but a strip of land a little less than five miles wide on the western edge is not included. The map shows roads completed in 1891 along with those completed prior to that date. The map is folded as issued. One of the folds is quite browned and has been reinforced on the verso with archival tissue along with the loss of a couple of letters. There is one split on a corner fold that is about 1 inch long. Overall, this is a wonderful item that leaves the viewer wondering what the Park must have been like at that time. On March 1st, 1872 President Grant signed into existence Yellowstone National Park. Immediately attention was drawn to the area with regards to how it could be opened up for public access. One of the most challenging tasks was to build roads through the rugged terrain. Much of this task was given to Hiram Chittenden. Many of the landmarks in the park that are now so famous are identified even though there were no, or few, roads to get to them. If you are a fan of maps or Yellowstone National Park then this would be a great item to archival mat and frame. Hang it in a place of distinction in your den or office.
