This utility tray is a wonderful piece of primitive early Americana. It is hand made from solid walnut. Each side has beading cut along the top and the bottom of each board. These beads were cut by hand using a beading plane. They are not machine cut. A partition board in the middle serves as the handle and has a second partition on one side. This is a make-do piece. The top of the handle broke off at one time and was replaced with a leather strap that has been nailed across the partition. The construction of the box is simple, using butt joints and all early square head nails. No fancy mortises or dovetails in this piece! It measures 5 3/8 inches by 9 ½ inches. The tray is 2 ½ inches tall. The height to the top of the handle is 5 ¼ inches. On one end there are two splits in the wood that occurred along the grain lines. These splits were strengthened with small brads. There is no finish applied to the wood. It has remained natural all these years and the walnut has developed a nice dark brown patina. The iron nails have reacted with the wood and have produced a slight black stain around each nail head. This is a nice little item that would be a great piece to put on a desk or shelf for holding odds and ends, paper clips, or any such other items.
