Designed to hold stereopticon slides for display in your Victorian parlor, this walnut, painted, and gilded piece measures 8 3/8 inches long by 5 ½ inches wide standing 8 inches tall from the bottom of the feet to the top of the handle. It is constructed of solid walnut with elaborate pierced carvings on all four sides and on the handle. The carvings are further decorated with black paint and gilding, all done in a style that is similar to Eastlake Period. The corners are all butt joined and nailed. Several of the nails appear to be modern replacements. The divider is also nailed from the sides and bottom. The walnut board for the bottom is stamped with the numbers 5 5 5 on the underside. We are unable to determine the significance of those numbers but they are most likely inventory numbers from a Victorian era manufacturer. With the exception of the underside of the bottom, all exposed surfaces are varnished. The construction of the box remains sound. The finish has areas of surface varnish having been rubbed off, revealing original wood underneath. While it shows its age, it does not appear to be abused and still has lots of life and fun left in it. It would make a great letter or mail box for your desk.
