We continue to look for unusual high quality Norwegian, Swedish or Scandinavian bentwood boxes, or tines, to satisfy the needs of our continually growing collector base. This time we are offering you a wonderful hand-painted Norwegian tine that is both striking in its details and quite rare. It measure 18 3/4 inches long, by 10 1/4 inches wide, by 7 ½ inches tall with the vertical end posts providing a total height of 9 inches. We have had a very limited number of boxes of this size and style over the years and when we locate one they disappear fast – usually being sold to return back home to Norway or Sweden.
This box is made from solid wood using the traditional methods of construction. It is made from straight-grained fir and pine, and has the traditional birch root lacing which is remarkably well preserved. All fasteners are wooden pegs – absolutely no metal brads used anywhere in construction. Many times these boxes are missing most of their pegs as they fall out over time. In this case only one is missing and one might be a replacement. It has been beautifully decorated in the traditional Viksdal style, showing the standard painted swirl patterns against the traditional salmon ground. The condition of the box is quite good. The base is firmly attached with no signs of weakening due to wood shrinkage, which is so common in this type of box. The lid still snaps down tight as it was originally intended to do. The paint is in very good condition with only minor paint loss from wear and flaking. As would be expected from a box of this age, there are minor chips, cracks and abrasions, none of which jeopardize the integrity of the piece and only serve to enhance its wonderful look. There are signs of minor insect damage that was done at a much earlier time. The lid does not have a handle and there is no indication that there ever was a handle. All in all, it is a beautiful box with outstanding patina.
This box comes to us directly from England, so it did not make the standard immigrant trip to the U.S. If you collect Scandinavian folk art, Norwegian bent wood boxes, or primitive items, then this is a piece that you do not want to miss. The painted style and condition of this box is extremely rare. The time to buy one is when you see it. You do not know when you might see another one!
