Some of the must desirable boxes sought by collectors of Scandinavian folk art are Norwegian rosemaling painted tines done in the Viksdal style. This outstanding hand-painted rare Norwegian tine is striking in its details and color. It measure 18 3/4 inches long, by 10 1/4 inches wide, by 7 ½ inches tall with the vertical end posts providing a total height of 9 inches. We have had a very limited number of boxes of this size and style over the years and when we locate them they disappear fast – usually being shipped back home to Norway.

This piece is made from solid wood using the traditional methods of construction. It is made with straight-grained fir and has the traditional birch root lacing which is remarkably well preserved. All fasteners are wooden pegs – absolutely no metal brads used anywhere in construction. Many times these boxes are missing most of their pegs as they fall out over time. In this case only one is missing and one might be a replacement. It has been beautifully decorated in the traditional Viksdal style, showing the standard painted swirl patterns against the traditional salmon ground. The condition of the box is quite good. The bottom is firmly attached with no signs of weakness due to wood shrinkage, which is so common in this type of box. The lid still snaps down tight as it was originally intended to do. The paint is in very good condition with only minor paint loss from wear and flaking. As would be expected from a box of this age, there are minor chips, cracks and abrasions, none of which jeopardize the integrity of the piece and only serve to enhance its wonderful look. There are signs of minor insect damage that was done at a much earlier time. All in all, it is a beautiful box with outstanding patina.

If you collect Scandinavian folk art, Norwegian bent wood boxes, or painted primitives, then this is a piece that you do not want to miss. The painted style and condition of this box is extremely rare. The time to buy one is when you see it. You do not know when you might see another one of this quality!
