We continue to look for unusual high quality Norwegian, Swedish or Scandinavian bentwood boxes, or tines, to satisfy the needs of our continually growing collector base. This time we are offering you a wonderful hand-painted figural tine that is both striking in its details and quite rare. It measure 7 3/8 inches long, by 3 inches wide, by 2 3/4 inches tall with the vertical end posts providing a total height of 3 3/4 inches. We have had a very limited number of boxes of this type over the years and when we locate one they disappear fast – usually being sold to be sent back home to Norway or Sweden.

This box is made from solid wood using the traditional methods of construction. It is made from straight-grained fir and pine, and has the traditional birch root lacing which is remarkably still all intact. All fasteners are wooden pegs – absolutely no metal brads used anywhere in construction. It has been beautifully decorated with a hand-painted domestic scene that wraps completely around the box showing individuals in traditional clothing along with some chickens and a dog. The top is painted with swirling vines of clover leaves and blossoms. Finally, it is covered with a thin layer of protective varnish. The condition is quite good. The base is firmly attached to the sides with no loosening due to wood shrinkage, which is so common in boxes of this type. There are very tiny chips of wood missing at the corners of the top and small pieces of wood have splintered off the two sides of the top. The lid snaps down tight just as it was originally intended to do. The painted images are in very good condition with only minor paint loss from wear and flaking. The inside is lined with old silver-gray paper that was used to protect the interior. There is also the remnant of a shop label still attached to the bottom. Alas, the writing on the label can not be deciphered. It is a beautiful box with outstanding patina.

If you collect Scandinavian folk art, Norwegian bentwood boxes, or primitive items, then this is a piece that you do not want to miss. The painted style and condition of this box is extremely rare. The time to buy one is when you see it. You do not know when you might see another one! You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage. We stand behind everything that we sell.
