Here is an early Norwegian pantry box decorated in the Telemark style of rosemaling. The box is substantial in size measuring approximately 11 inches in diameter and 4 ½ inches tall. The condition of the box is consistent with its age and honest use. The rosemaling is very nicely done showing all the colors and styling that would be expected in Telemark rosemaling that was done by an expert. The box still retains all its original wooden pegs used to attach the sides to the bottom. Also, the original root lacing is all completely intact. There is a split in the bottom along with a small sliver of missing bottom wood. Tool marks are present and the grain shows places where a plane tore the wood. There was probably a lid at one time, but that is long gone, if it ever existed. The photographs are an integral part of the description of this box, so look at them carefully. The box is a classic piece of Norwegian folk art that has all the colors, design and construction that one would like to see in such a piece. This is a fine display item that would add interest to any collection of Scandinavian or Norwegian folk art, as well as provide useful storage space.
