We are offering a wonderful piece of Norwegian folk art, a rosemaling decorated pantry box, or tine, done in the Viksdal style. It is nicely sized, making it easy to display or even use for storage, and has a fine traditional Viksdal hand painted design. If you collect Norwegian folk art, then you do not want to pass up this opportunity. Viksdal painted items are highly desirable and eagerly sought after with their prices skyrocketing. This box measures about 10 ½ inches in diameter and has a total height of 5 ¼ inches. The height of the box is a bit larger than normally found for boxes of this type. The classic Viksdal paint colors are all present. The ground is salmon and the overlay designs are done in black, yellow, and green. The original birch root lacing is all present along with the traditional Shaker style fingers. The box has withstood the test of time very well. It has very minor shrinkage between the bottom and sides. Both the top board and the bottom board have split along the original joinery lines used to make the top and bottom pieces. Although they are split the bottom and top are still sound. There is a crack along the upper rim of the lid along with some minor loss of wood due to the crack. The bottom has a scorch mark where the piece was left to close to a fire at one time. Both the bottom and top were originally attached to the sides using a combination of wooden pegs and nails. Some of the nails and pegs are missing, but the top and bottom still remain in place. The new owner might consider putting in some new wooden pegs where old pegs have been lost. While this is not necessary, it would help to enhance the stability of the top and bottom. The surface has great patina with some darkening due to age and accumulated years of dirt. There are also the usual scratches and abrasions associated with years of use. One interesting quality is a series of small ridges running across the top and the bottom. These are a result of using a plane that had a nick in the blade that was used for smoothing the surfaces. It adds a very human artisan touch to the piece. Overall, this is a very nice box with interesting and aesthetically appealing decorative elements, impressive condition, and great folk art appeal.

If you are a collector of Norwegian or Scandinavian folk art, then this box will be a nice and interesting addition to your collection. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage.
