We are offering a piece of Norwegian folk art that is unusual because of the excellent condition that it is in. It is a rosemaling decorated tine done in the Os style. The paint is both clean and bright and the box is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or weakness anywhere. It is a nice size for display purposes and has a wonderful traditional Os hand painted floral design. If you collect Norwegian folk art, then you do not want to pass up this opportunity. Os painted items are some of the most desirable and eagerly sought pieces to come out of Norway. This box measures 9 inches long, 5 inches wide, and has a total height of 4 ¼ inches which includes the vertical locking posts. The height of the box portion alone is 3 3/8 inches. The classic Os paint colors are all present. The ground is a salmon-brown and the floral designs are done in greens, yellow, browns, whites, and blues. The box has withstood the test of time very well. It has no shrinkage between the bottom and sides so that the bottom fits tight. The original handle made from a bentwood twig is still present and solid. There is one small hole where the maker appears to have inadvertently driven a nail to lap the sides together and then changed his mind leaving the hole unused. At the end of the lap on the side the wood has lifted away very slightly from the wood underneath. This is a result of the normal movement of wood over time. The paint on the sides and top of the box is clean and bright with a muted patina. The paint decoration is very well done and still in very good condition. There is a round motif on one side that has Os 1895 painted inside. Written in early ink on the underside is the name “M. Lutken”. Overall, this is a very nice box with interesting and aesthetically appealing decorative elements and impressive condition.

If you are a collector of Norwegian or Scandinavian folk art, then this box will be a nice and interesting addition to your collection. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage.
