We are offering a wonderful piece of Norwegian folk art, a rosemaling decorated tine done in the Viksdal style. It is nicely sized, making it easy to display, and has a very nice traditional Viksdal hand painted design. If you collect Norwegian folk art, then you do not want to pass up this opportunity. Viksdal painted items are highly desirable and eagerly sought after with their prices skyrocketing. This box measures 11 inches long, 7 inches wide, and has a total height of 6 1/2 inches which includes the vertical locking posts. The height of the box portion alone is 4 1/2 inches. The classic Viksdal paint colors are all present. The ground is salmon and the overlay designs are done in black, yellow, and white. The original birch root lacing is all present along with the traditional Shaker style fingers. The box has withstood the test of time very well. It has very minor shrinkage between the bottom and sides. There is a ¾ inch crack in the bentwood immediately below one of the vertical posts. Because of the location of the crack, the box is not weakened since it is supported by the vertical post underneath. There are two chips of wood missing on the lid, one chip from one of the wings on the lid and the other next to the slot for one of the vertical posts. The paint on the sides of the box is clean and bright. The top of the lid has a dark patina from years of exposure to grime that settled upon it. The paint decoration is very well done and still in very good condition. This box has a mystery that remains unsolved. Written lightly in yellow paint on the lid and side is the number 29 done is script. Coincidentally, we also have a second Viksdal box clearly done by the same hand that has the number 30 written exactly the same way on it. The maker might simply have chosen to number all of his boxes, but we do not know for sure. Overall, this is a very nice box with interesting and aesthetically appealing decorative elements and impressive condition.

If you are a collector of Norwegian or Scandinavian folk art, then this box will be a nice and interesting addition to your collection. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage.
