Consider making an offer on this wonderful piece of Norwegian folk art!

This is a wonderful piece of Norwegian folk art. It is very substantial in size and has a nice grain painted surface along with a date and initials. If you collect Norwegian or Swedish folk art, then you do not want to pass up this opportunity. The box is quite large. It measures 15 inches long, 9 1/2 inches wide, and has a total height of 9 1/2 inches which includes the vertical locking posts. The height of the box portion alone is 7 1/4 inches. The piece is covered with a wonderful grain painted surface in shades of oxblood and brown. There is also a small amount of green painted striping on the bottom edge of the box and along the chamfers on the lid. On one side written in white paint it says “MCDR 1850”. On the opposite side along with the traditional Shaker style fingers, there are two rows of birch root lacing that is all intact. One of the more unusual aspects of this box is the wooden sliding latch on the lid that helps to keep the box closed. It also has a handle that is attached to the lid using a sliding dovetail which has minimized warping of the wooden lid. The box has withstood the test of time very well. It has the usual minor cracks and gaps that are a result of many years of the wood expanding and contracting. The majority of the original carved wooden pegs used to hold the box together are still present. There is also a very early patch made from sheet iron that has been used to stabilize an age crack that runs around part of one end. This repair has worked very well and has kept the crack from weakening the box. The patch actually adds interest to the piece. There is some old insect damage that is no longer inhabited. The paint decoration is very well done and still in very good condition. Overall, this is a very nice box with interesting and aesthetically appealing decorative elements and impressive condition.

If you are a collector of Norwegian or Scandinavian folk art, then this box will be a nice and interesting addition to your collection. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage.
