This wonderful piece of folk art is unique because of its substantial size and its wonderfully grain painted surface. If you collect Norwegian or Swedish folk art, tiner or svepaskar, then you do not want to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The box is quite large and measures 18.5 inches long, 10.5 inchesh wide, and has a total height of 8.25 inches. The height of the box portion alone is 6.25 inches. We believe that the box is from the late 19th century and the paint is a slightly later addition, although still from the late 1800's. This box came to us directly from England, so it was most likely painted there or in Norway. The box has withstood the test of time very well. It has the usual minor cracks and gaps that are a result of many years of the wood expanding and contracting. There is a burn in the interior where the wood was scorched at one time. This burn does not extend through the wood and is only visible inside. The box was originally constructed using wooden pegs and birch lacing. The lacing is all present and most of the wooden pegs are in place. There are a few locations where pegs dropped out and were replaced with iron nails. There is a wonderful hand made iron handle attached to the lid with clinched iron pins. The paint decoration is very well done. It is some of the finest most vibrant grain painting that we have ever seen. It was done by an expert who used the grain patterns to emphasize the size and shape of the box. The paint is still strong with some cracking and minor chipping. Overall, this is a very nice box with interesting and aesthetically appealing decorative elements and impressive condition.

If you are a collector of Norwegian or Scandinavian folk art, then this box will be a nice and interesting addition to your collection. You can buy with confidence from Sweetpea Cottage.
