We are offering a wonderful piece of tramp art for your consideration that is loaded with notches. We believe that it was intended to be either a sewing box or dresser box. Sitting on the top are two velvet pin cushions that appear to be original, both sitting in notched frames. On the front there are two small drawers also surrounded by notched frames, just the right size for storing small odds and ends. The drawer on the left has a wonderful age shadow inside where a key once sat. The top is also hinged so that it will open up to reveal a shallow storage space. The bottom of the storage space has a wooden panel that will lift out to reveal additional storage in the cabinet area where the drawers reside when closed. The box measures 10 inches long, 4 3/4 inches deep and 4 inches tall. There are four delightful ebonized feet on the bottom that add an additional 1 inch to the height. We are able to date the box to approximately 1875 based on the cigar tax stamps which are still attached to the back and bottom. Overall, condition is consistent with age. The lid has a slight warp that prevents it from sitting tight on the top. One of the hinges has lost its hinge pin and has a small brad replacement. There is an illustrated ad pasted inside the lid that advertises "A purely vegetable medicine."
