We are offering a very nice tramp art box from Germany that is in good condition and has a working lock and key. The box measures 10 inches long, by 7 ¼ inches tall, by 7 inches deep. The four sides and top are heavily decorated with deep notch-work. In addition, on the top and all sides there are inlaid pieces of velour. There are also plated brass embellishments on all the sides and top. On the front it says “Andenken” which is German for “Souvenir” and on the back it is dated 1893. The lock and key work smoothly to keep the lid closed. Inside the box there is a wooden jewelry tray insert that easily lifts out. At one time the inside, including the lid, was lined, no doubt with velour, but somebody has removed it so that bare wood is exposed. It looks rough right now but with a little work it could be easily relined with a material of your choosing. This box was most likely made as a gift for someone special as were so many of these boxes. Several small pieces of the notch-work are missing. The placement of the missing pieces is strategic so that they are hardly noticed. On the bottom there are 4 lion’s paw feet which we believe are relatively new additions added to give the piece a sense of lift. There are also some insect holes, primarily visible on the underside. They appear to no longer be active. Overall, this is a fine box that has survived very well and is ready to be used again. It you collect tramp art then this piece will be a striking addition to your collection. It would be a very nice desk box or would look great on your dresser or on a shelf.
