This wonderful sliding lid box has several features that make special. The box is made from a very dark and heavy wood, probably oak, and measures 10 ¼ inches, by 8 inches, by 3 3/8 inches tall. It is reinforced throughout with heavy iron work. The corners appear to be dovetailed together, based on the appearance of some registration lines on the inside. The outside corners are all covered with heavy iron strapping that wraps the corners and hide the dovetails from external view. A very heavy solid iron lock is on the sliding end of the box and is supposed to engage an iron piece inset into the underside of the sliding lid. The key for the lock is gone. Inside, the box is divided into six compartments with mortised wooden dividers. They are all present and firmly in place. The front end of the box has a beautifully carved set of identification marks: “Joh Roos” and “W.C. 1804”. The name is most likely Dutch or German. The box comes from central New York state supporting both possible origins, with an emphasis on Dutch. It is a terrific item and in wonderful condition. The lid was split at one time but has been carefully repaired with reinforcing ironwork on the underside. The box is rock solid and will stay that way. The iron work has done its job to hold the piece together. A wonderful patina has developed over the years.
