We are offering a really spectacular gigantic map of the railroads of Pennsylvania that was published by the Pennsylvania Department of Internal Affairs and is dated 1890. The map comes in a hard bound set of covers. Inside it is stamped with “Compliments of Samuel B. Keppel House of Representatives”. The covers measure 6 1/8 inches by 9 3/4 inches with a map pocket inside. The covers are slightly soiled and the inside binding shows a repair to reinforce the piece.
The map is absolutely magnificent. It measures approximately 37" by 57". That is 2109 square inches of detailed railroad map! The condition is very good to fine. There is some minor yellowing from age and the seam running down the center of the map where the two halves were glued together shows some foxing from the glue. There are a few minor splits at the folds and some slight separations at some of the fold corners. Most of these separations have been strengthened professionally on the reverse with archival tape. The map is titled “Rail Road Map of Pennsylvania Published by Department of Internal Affairs of Pennsylvania 1890 Drawn and Compiled by J. Sutton Wall, Chief Draughtsman. Thos. J. Stewart, Secretary Issac B. Brown, Deputy Secretary.” The map is in beautiful colors representing each of the counties in Pennsylvania and the railroad lines are printed in bright red. It is a great map that graphically shows the high density of the railroads in the areas of Pennsylvania that were heavily mined for coal and used in the steel industry in 1890. It does a nice job of reflecting the industrial might of the state as the U.S. approached 1900. The map is wonderful just the way it is, but if the new owner wishes, it would be a great map to matte, frame and hang on the wall.
