Papier Mache Folding Japanned Corner Double Shelf w/ Insect Designs
Here is your opportunity to obtained a nice japanned papier mache collapsible corner shelf. The japanned black papier mache (or paper mache) resembles Victorian-era lacquerware. If desired the shelf can be completely folded flat for storage. You will find many versions of this piece having a single shelf. This one is unusual in that it is a double shelf – providing twice the display space. The design is also a bit out of the ordinary in that it has both a fish and a bird design in the middle with scrolling vines, flowers, and butterflies covering the rest of the space. The whole piece speaks of Victorian elegance and adds a decorative touch to any room. It is 16 ½ inches long and each wing is about 7 1/4 inches wide. The top shelf is curved and has a radius of 4 3/8 inches while the bottom shelf has a radius of 7 1/4 inches. Two holes are located near the top sides for hanging on a wall. It is made from 1/8 inch thick papier mache that has been completely japanned black on the front and back. Over the top of the black ground there are very nicely done designs as described earlier. Overall, the condition of this item is quite good with minor wear and damage that is consistent with age and the fragile nature of papier mache. The hinges are all still tight and there are no signs of cracks or breaks. Some of the japanning has lifted off of the papier mache in a line where the shelf meets the side panels. It appears to be a result of the shelves sticking to the panels at one time. Fortunately, the damage is not visible when the shelves are in place and can only be seen when the shelf is collapsed. There are the usual minor blemishes and imperfections associated with this delicate type of item, but nothing that detracts from the usefulness or look of the shelf. This is a great survivor that will add a highly decorative element to any wall. This shelf is most likely dating from 1890-1900 when papier mache was widely used in Victorian homes. The highly reflective nature of the papier mache surface has made it difficult to photograph and many of the images show reflections from the other side.
