Here is your opportunity to obtained a nice japanned papier mache collapsible shelf at a very reasonable price. The japanned black papier mache (or paper mache) resembles Victorian-era lacquerware. Floral motifs gaily dance up the piece with a bird in flight adding a touch of whimsy. The whole piece speaks of Victorian elegance and adds a decorative touch to any room. It is a total of 7 1/4 inches long and about 10 inches wide. The semi-circular shelf sits a maximum of 5 inches from the wall. Two holes are located at the top for hanging on a wall. It is made from 1/8 inch papier mache that has been completely japanned black on the front and back. Over top of the black ground there are very nicely done floral / bird designs. Overall, the condition of this item is quite good with minor wear and damage that is consistent with age and the fragile nature of papier mache. The hinges are all still tight and there are no signs of cracks or breaks. Where the eye is located for attaching the hook that assembles the piece, the papier mache has been damaged. Fortunately, the damage is on the underside of the shelf where it is not likely to be seen when in use. (See photos) There are no tears or bends as so often happens with papier mache. If desired the shelf can be completely folded flat. There are the usual minor blemishes and imperfections associated with this delicate type of item, but nothing that distracts from the usefulness or look of the shelf. This is a great survivor that will add a highly decorative element to any wall. This shelf is most likely English dating from 1890-1900 when papier mache was widely used in late-Victorian homes..
