This is a wonderful miniature Norwegian dome-top blanket chest with a till, also called a kiste or skrin. It is nicely decorated on all four sides and top with rosemaling (rose painting) designs. The style of the rosemaling is Os, originating in a region near Bergen. It measures 9 inches long, about 4 3/4 inches deep and 5 1/2 inches tall. There is a black ground on all sides and top along with gold painted edging and banding. The Os floral designs fill in the fields between the banding. The inside is painted with a white ground with Os motifs painted on the underside of the lid and the top of the till lid. A traditional hand-made wire handle is on the lid. The box has a lock with a working key, which is unusual for a piece that is this old. The catch for the lock on the underside of the lid is bent somewhat so that it no longer engages the lock. It could possibly be bent back into place so that it catches again. We have chosen to leave it as it is.

The overall condition of the piece is quite good. It is structurally solid with all four corners still tight. The hinges are original and holding strong. The 4 feet are all present and well attached. The painted surfaces are in good condition. The colors are still vibrant with some minor chipping and loss from abrasion and minor spotting. The colors on the top are slightly muted as a result of dust and smoke settling on the surface over the years. The rosemaling is beautiful and a real plus for the piece. This is a good example of Norwegian folk art. These boxes are becoming more and more difficult to find in good condition. This one has a very appealing look and the black ground makes an elegant statement. You will not be disappointed. We urge you to go to the internet for the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum and you will see similar miniature chests in their collection. This is a high quality box. Boxes of this type were commonly made between about 1880 and 1910.
