We are offering a wonderful miniature Norwegian kiste, or dome top chest with a till, that has been nicely decorated on all four sides and top with rosemaling (rose painting) designs. The chest is 13 inches long, about 7 inches deep and 6 1/2 inches tall. The piece is painted in the traditional manner of Os decorated items. It has a white ground on all sides and top along with green painted edging that outlines Os decorative floral elements. The dome top is decorated with a strong design consisting of three panels. The design is repeated on all the sides. The inside is painted with a white ground. The underside of the lid and the till lid are both decorated similar to the design on the outside. A lock is present but there is no key. At one time somebody added two handles to the sides which we feel were not original to the piece. The handles are now gone, but the face plates for the handles remain. Look closely at the photos and you will see that their impact is subtle. The back of this box has text painted in early Norwegian script. A very loose translation is “You are so young, fine and rich, You can be (unknown), If you want anything, Nothing stands in your way.” We once had a piece very similar to this that was signed and dated as 1885. We assume that this one is from the same period.

The overall condition of the piece is quite good. It is structurally solid. There are minor separations at the corners that usually occur from shrinkage over time. The domed bent wood lid is lifting a bit from the end pieces of the lid, again this is due to shrinkage over time and the stress placed on the wood as a result of steam bending. These types of separations are commonly found in these boxes and is a result of continual drying and contracting of the wood. The top is still tightly attached and the hinges are holding strong. The painted surface is in excellent condition although substantially darkened as a result of protective varnish that was originally applied over the surface which has darkened with age and grime. The rosemaling is beautiful and a real plus for the piece. This box is as good as they get. You will have to look hard and wait a long time before you find one that is more appealing. You will not be disappointed. We urge you to go to the internet for the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum and you will see similar miniature kiste in their collection. This is a museum quality box.
