We have managed to obtain a terrific souvenir of Nice, France. This is a hand made wooden jewelry box with a hinged lid. It is completely made from olive wood and beautifully paint-decorated with floral designs. The item was crafted in Provence, France during the early 1900's as part of a cottage industry and sold as a souvenir to visitors of Nice, France. It measures 10 1/4 inches long, 3 ½ inches deep, and about 2 3/4 inches tall. Inside, both the box and the lid are lined with tufted, padded pale blue-gray satin. On the outside lid there are a variety of flowers, berries and greenery painted along with the name "Nice". This is a very pleasing little piece of art. Look at the photos carefully and you will notice the beautifully delicate nature of the piece and the fine artistry of the painted flowers. The whole piece has been top-coated with a layer of varnish that has protected the floral painting over the years and adds a marvelous visual quality to the wood. The condition is generally good, but there is some loss of paint on some of the flowers. In addition, there is a crack that has developed at the back right corner. (See photos.) This has not impacted on the integrity of the box at all. It is still very sound and in beautiful condition. A clasp on the front is used to close the lid. This looks to be original to the piece and still works fine. The box is a beautiful little item and would look terrific on display on your bookshelf, dresser, or sitting on a desk holding small incidentals such as paper clips. If you ever wondered what happens to old olive trees when they die, here is your answer. They continue to live on in beautifully crafted items such as this.
