This is a highly desirable, very collectible, hand hammered solid silver Navajo-made spoon. It measures 4 1/2 inches long and the bowl is 1 5/8 inches long by 1 1/8 inch wide. It is made from 19 grams of heavy gauge silver by a Navajo artisan. Fabricated during the early 1900's this type of spoon was always made from ingot silver by the Navajo Indians (Dineh) of Arizona and New Mexico for the tourist trade, usually selling their wares at the Harvey Houses or railroad stations. They were never marked for silver content. The design elements are all hand die-stamped into this spoon so that they are very deep and clear. The top end of the handle consists of two very deeply stamped animal heads that are either deer or elk. Below that is a series of stamped elements that give the impression of being some sort of shield perhaps with hanging feathers. The bowl has three stamped elk/deer heads along with seven whirling logs. The length of the handle is stamped with a series of randomly shaped lines. The condition of the spoon is very good. The silver is heavy and the piece shows the requisite file and hammer marks that are a result of the craftsman working the piece. We suspect that it was polished at one time. Some of the original dark patina is still left and it will continue to develop more over the years. Based on the design alone, this is a wonderful and rare item. Navajo spoons with animal themes are highly desirable and becoming much harder to obtain.

If you collect Navajo spoons then this spoon is for you. It is a nice addition to your collection. If you do not collect these spoons then it is time to start. Their value is skyrocketing since the release of the Navajo spoon book by Cindra Kline. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
