This is a highly desirable, very collectible, hand hammered silver Navajo-made spoon. It measures 4 5/8 inches long and the bowl is 1 3/4 inches long by 1 inch wide. It is made from 19 grams of heavy gauge silver by a Navajo artisan. Fabricated during the early 1900's this type of spoon was always made from ingot silver by the Navajo Indians (Dineh) of Arizona and New Mexico for the tourist trade, usually selling their wares at the Harvey Houses or railroad stations. They were never marked for silver content. The design elements are all hand die-stamped into this spoon so that they are very deep and clear. The bowl has a well executed whirling logs along with a set of crossed arrows. Around the rim of the bowl there is a scalloped design that is made with stamped arrow heads. The handle is stamped with a variety of elements that are not defined with regards to what they represent. The top of the handle has a nicely stamped and cutout whirling logs symbol. The condition of the spoon is very good. The silver is heavy and the piece shows the requisite file and hammer marks that are a result of the craftsman working the piece. The surface of the handle has a number of scratches which are clearly visible in the photos and are most likely original to the piece. We cannot determine if it was ever polished but it gives the appearance of original patina. By any standard this is a nicely executed spoon.

If you collect Navajo spoons then this spoon is for you. It is a nice addition to your collection. If you do not collect these spoons then it is time to start. Their value is skyrocketing since the release of the Navajo spoon book by Cindra Kline. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
