This highly desirable and very collectible hand hammered silver Navajo-made iced tea spoon measures 8.125 inches long and the bowl is 1.375 inches wide by 2.125 inches long. It is exceptionally long and made from heavy gauge silver by a Navajo artisan. At the turn of the last century this type of spoon was always made from ingot silver by the Navajo Indians (Dineh) of Arizona and New Mexico for the tourist trade, usually selling their wares at the Harvey Houses or railroad stations. They were never marked for silver content. The design elements are all expertly hand die-stamped into this spoon so that they are very deep and clear. The bowl has a very well executed thunderbird that is associated with Harvey Houses along with an organic design that is in the nature of a blossom. The top of the handle has organic graphic designs around the edges along with an arrow and two whirling logs. The spoon is much longer than most spoons made by the Navajo during this time period and is probably intended to be an iced tea spoon. The condition of the spoon is excellent. The silver is heavy and the piece shows the requisite file and hammer marks that are a result of the craftsman working the piece. It was polished at one time by a previous owner and it is developing the beautiful glowing patina that collectors value on these old spoons. In our opinion this spoon is a step above most spoons of this type because of the high weight of the silver in the spoon and the nice design themes that are so well hammered into the piece. Overall, this spoon is a gem.
