This is a highly desirable, very collectible, and unusual hand hammered silver Navajo-made baby spoon. It measures 3 1/2 inches long and the bowl is 1 7/8 inches long by 1 1/4 inches wide. It is made from 18 grams of heavy gauge silver by a Navajo artisan. Fabricated during the early 1900's this type of spoon was always made from ingot silver by the Navajo Indians (Dineh) of Arizona and New Mexico for the tourist trade, usually selling their wares at the Harvey Houses or railroad stations. They were never marked for silver content. The design elements are all hand die-stamped into this spoon so that they are very deep and clear. The bowl has a well executed thunderbird that is associated with Harvey Houses along with a double-shafted arrow. Around the rim of the bowl there is a scalloped design frequently described as a cloud pattern. The handle is bent around to double back on itself where it is soldered to the back of the bowl. The top of the handle which is behind the bowl has a variety of iconic symbols that together give the impression of being an owl. The condition of the spoon is excellent. The silver is heavy and the piece shows the requisite file and hammer marks that are a result of the craftsman working the piece. It was polished at one time by a previous owner and is now redeveloping the beautiful glowing patina that collectors value on these old spoons. By any standard this is a nicely executed spoon that is made exceptional because it is a “baby spoon.” Overall, this spoon is a gem.
If you collect Navajo spoons then this spoon is for you. It is a nice elegant addition to your collection. If you do not collect these spoons then it is time to start. Their value is skyrocketing since the release of the Navajo spoon book by Cindra Kline. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED.
