This dresser or desk box is a wonderful example of high relief wood carving done in the style of Black Forest items. The carving was done by a master carver. The piece measures 12 inches long by 8 inches wide and stands 4 3/8 inches tall. The constructions consists of mitered corners with the unfinished bottom board nailed on with early square brads. The hinges on the lid are iron that is brass plated and they look to be original to the piece. There is a leaf and vine design that runs across the top of the lid and encircles the word “Mother”. The two sides and front of the box have additional carvings done that represent leaves with flowers. The carving is very deep and very well done. Backing each of the carved areas there is texture work that was painstakingly added to provide an additional element of interest. The wood is solid walnut except for the bottom which is rough sawn unfinished oak. A surface coat of varnish covers all of the sides with the exception of the bottom. The varnish has held up well with only minor losses from abrasions and scratches. The underside of the box has some insect damage which has not penetrated into the sides or top. The resident insects seems to now be gone. Inside, red velvet covers the underside of the lid and the inside of the box. The velvet shows wear, a little unraveling along the edges, and soiling but is still acceptable and certainly usable the way it is. There is a lock on the box, but no key. Perhaps one could be made? On the front of the lid there is a place in the wood which appears to be a split that was most likely there when the piece was made. It is very subtle and 100% solid. Overall, the condition of the piece is better than would be expected for an item of this age. The feminine nature of this box would make it a great gift for the special mother in your life, although it would also look good in just about any location where a nice box seems to be appropriate.
