This mangle board is carved and painted, and has the traditional horse handle. It is wonderfully carved from an extremely heavy piece of quartersawn birch. There are a variety of elaborately carved pinwheel designs running up the length of the piece. The board averages to be about 1 inch thick. Much of the board retains the original bittersweet paint with an overcoat of a dark green that has chipped off in a number of locations. The exposed wood both on the face and underneath has a wonderful rich dark brown color. The handle is a traditional stylized horse design that has been dovetailed into the base. The horse was painted black at one time with much of it now worn off revealing a beautifully buffed wooden surface underneath. A dovetailed stop block was used behind the horse to hold it into place. There is a small amount of play in the location of the horse that is a result of the wood drying out over the years. Because of that the horse can now shift about 1/4 inch. Overall the board measures 24 1/4 inches long, is 6 inches wide at the widest point, and the horse stands 3 1/4 inches tall above the surface of the board. The condition is typical of mangle boards that are about 200 years old. There is some grunge on the surface, along with very old chips and speckles. There is some insect damage which appears to no longer be active. This board does not have a wall hanger which is unusual but it definitely had one at one time. The surface patina provides the look that serious collectors are always striving for. Whomever was lucky enough to originally receive this gift must have been very special as it is a beautiful piece of work that has aged very well. Look at the Vesterheim Museum collection of mangle boards on the internet and you will see that the one we are offering is of museum quality.
Mangle boards, or "mangletrær" in Norwegian, are some of the most highly sought after and collected antiques from Scandinavia. While originally intended to be used for smoothing sheets and linens, by tradition they became devices that were hand-carved by men to be given to their brides at the time when they became betrothed. It was a sign of honor to have a beautifully carved and/or painted mangle board hanging on your wall. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind item that will look absolutely wonderful in your home.
