Very Large Art Deco Paul Fouillen Framed Quimper Tray, Signed, Painted Pyrography, Ca. 1930's - image 1 of 12

Paul Fouillen (1899-1958) is one of the more recognized artisans from the Quimper region in France. He worked in a variety of media, mostly pottery. This piece is an unusual item in that it is a pyrography engraved board that has been enhanced with paint. Fouillen did a very small number of pieces in this form, but the large size for this piece makes it quite rare. We have not found any other similar piece with these dimensions. It measures 13 ½ inches by 18 inches. From the base to the top of the handles it measures 2 ¾ inches. The piece has been framed into a serving tray form with handles and is covered with glass. The scene is an outdoor market with 4 women and 2 men all in traditional Quimper dress. It is beautifully executed. There is a random black and white design running around the outside edges. On the front bottom right Fouillen has boldly signed the piece with engraved pyrography. On the underside of the tray there is a stamp “Quimper Deposee” with "PF" in the center. The two handles are slightly loose. The overall condition is excellent. There are only very minor condition issues including several small areas of paint loss. The overall condition of the piece is consistent with age. This piece of art would look lovely sitting on a table or possibly hung on a wall. As of now, there is no hanging mechanism, but one could be easily attached. This form is quite scarce and certainly demands a place of honor. Fouillen had a real knack for catching the essence of Quimper during the Art Deco era. You would love to show this piece in your French themed kitchen!

This item is very heavy and will require special packing because of the glass. The buyer will be fully refunded any over charge that occurs with the estimated shipping costs.
