We are offering the perfect piece to hang on the wall of your den, stable or tack room. This folk art hand carved mirror is shaped like a horseshoe and measures about 18 inches long, 10 3/4 inches wide, and sits out from the wall about 2 5/8 inches. The actual mirror space is 4 1/4 inches by 5 3/4 inches. The horseshoe even includes three cleats protruding from the surface, one on top and two on the bottom. Carved into the surface of the horseshoe itself is a leafy vine that curls around the piece and is topped with two flowers and a star. Gold paint is used strategically around the piece to provide accents to the designs. There are seven simulated horseshoe nails around the edges each painted to look like metal. There should be eight, but one of them is missing. You could easily make a replacement. On top of the piece there is a peculiar symbol that is probably intended to be “W W”, most likely significant to the original owner. The glass mirror is a modern replacement that is held in place on the back with a series of tacks and brads. The original hanging wire is still attached so the mirror is ready to be hung. The condition is good. It is covered with a heavy varnish that has started to craze and gather some dirt. Long ago there were a number of splits in the wood but they have all been glued back together so that the piece is totally solid. There are two small pieces of wood broken off from the sides of the two W's located at the top. The oxidation on the breaks give the impression that this happened many years ago. To the best of our knowledge we believe that the piece is made from pine.
